Plan around the monsoon
Is it monsoon in Maldives?
The Maldives runs on a single monsoon rhythm, but its intensity and timing shift noticeably from north to south. The southwest monsoon, roughly late April through September, brings the year's wind along with its rain, felt most strongly in the northern atolls like Hanimaadhoo, where it can make the sea rough enough to affect diving. The northeast monsoon, October through December, is quieter, bringing showers and thunderstorms rather than sustained wind and rough seas, especially in the southern atolls. Outside both monsoons, January through April is historically the driest, sunniest stretch across most of the country, and the best time for a visit.
That said, no two atolls behave quite the same. Malé and the central atolls see their rainy period stretch all the way into December, with February and March the least rainy months. Kadhdhoo and Thinadhoo, further south, follow a broadly similar pattern. Gan, on Addu Atoll near the equator, breaks from the rest of the country entirely: it has no real dry season, receiving the most total rainfall anywhere in the Maldives, but it's also the calmest for wind and the least exposed to tropical cyclones, since storms rarely form or persist this close to the equator.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Maldives have one monsoon season?›
The Maldives runs on a single monsoon system, the southwest monsoon from late April to September and the northeast monsoon from October to December, but its effects vary by atoll. The north feels the southwest monsoon's wind most strongly, the center sees its rainy period stretch furthest into the year, and the far south, near the equator, has no real dry season at all.
What is the best time to visit the Maldives overall?›
January to mid-April is historically the driest, sunniest season across most of the Maldives, though afternoon showers and thunderstorms are still possible, especially in the southern atolls.
Which part of the Maldives is best for diving conditions?›
The northeast monsoon period, roughly October through March, tends to bring calmer seas across most of the country. The southernmost atolls, being less exposed to the southwest monsoon's wind, can also be a good choice in the northern hemisphere summer.
Why does Gan have no dry season?›
Gan sits on Addu Atoll, just south of the equator, outside the main reach of the southwest monsoon's dry-season effect that shapes the rest of the country, so rain falls fairly evenly throughout the year there.
Does the Maldives get cyclones?›
The Maldives can occasionally be brushed by tropical cyclones, most often forming or passing between April and December, with two peaks in May and November. As low-lying islands, they can be affected by wind, rain, and unusual waves, though the southernmost atolls, near the equator, are affected only marginally.
Is humidity high throughout the Maldives?›
Yes. Relative humidity stays high and fairly stable across the whole country, around 80% year-round, regardless of atoll or season.
What should I pack for the Maldives?›
Lightweight, tropics-friendly clothing year-round, a light sweatshirt for the evening, a scarf for the breeze, a light raincoat or umbrella, sunglasses, and sunscreen. For the reef, snorkeling gear and water shoes are worth bringing.
