Seasons at a glance
🌟
Peak season: Jan, Feb, Mar
Con Dao's driest, calmest stretch, cool by the standards of this hot island, with the lightest rain and clearest water for diving and beach days. January and February are the coolest of the year, while March starts warming up but stays dry and pleasant. This is also the busiest window for boat trips out to the national park's smaller islands.
🌤️
Shoulder season: Apr, May, Jun, Jul, Nov, Dec
This tier covers the rest of the dry-to-transitional stretch plus one wet-season month. December is part of the recommended dry season but sits just behind the January to March core. April is still dry but noticeably hotter, edging toward the year's warmest days. November sees the northeast monsoon start easing off fast, one of the more pleasant transitional months despite technically being inside the rainy season. May and July fall within the wetter half of the year without quite reaching its worst.
Off-peak season: Aug, Sep, Oct
The peak of the rainy season, when both the southwest and northeast monsoons bring frequent rain, and August through October see the most rain days of the year. Ferries and boat trips to the outer islands, including the sea turtle nesting grounds, are more likely to be delayed by rough seas. Hotel prices drop to their lowest point of the year to match.
Good to know
✈️
Fly or take the ferry from Ho Chi Minh City
Direct flights from Tan Son Nhat take about an hour on Vietnam Airlines, Bamboo Airways, or Vietravel Airlines. A direct ferry from Saigon Port takes around 5 hours, while routes via Vung Tau or Soc Trang run 2.5 to 4.5 hours plus a bus transfer.
🐢
Sea turtles nest here from May to October
Con Dao is Vietnam's largest sea turtle nesting ground, with roughly 90% of the country's nesting turtles coming ashore here. Rangers on Bay Canh Island lead night viewings of nesting turtles and dawn releases of hatchlings.
🏛️
A former penal colony with a sobering history
For over a century Con Dao held Vietnam's largest prison complex, including the notorious "tiger cages." The preserved prison blocks and museum are among the most visited sites on the island.
💨
Winds pick up at both ends of the year
December and January bring the strongest winds of the year, and the southwest monsoon (May to August) adds its own 'lively winds' on top of the rain. Rougher seas at these times can affect ferries and boat trips.
