Seasons at a glance
🌟
Peak season: Jan, Feb, Dec
Can Tho's most comfortable stretch: hot and sunny with the least rain and the lowest risk of a lingering tropical cyclone. December still carries a small, fading chance of a late-season storm, and by February the heat is already climbing back up, but this is as comfortable as the Mekong Delta gets. Cai Rang floating market and the canals are at their easiest to visit, with calm water and clear mornings.
🌤️
Shoulder season: Mar, Apr, May, Jun, Oct, Nov
This tier spans quite different halves of the year. March and April are still dry season, but noticeably hotter, some of the most intense heat of the year builds through these months before the monsoon breaks it. May, June, and October sit within the wetter half of the year, rain is frequent, but conditions haven't reached the deepest, most saturated stretch of the monsoon yet. November sees the rains ease off fast as the season turns.
Off-peak season: Jul, Aug, Sep
The heart of the monsoon, when rain falls on the majority of days and September, the wettest month of the year, can bring flooding to low-lying parts of the delta. Canal and orchard tours can be disrupted by heavy downpours, though showers are often short and afternoon-focused. Hotel prices drop to their lowest point of the year to match.
Good to know
✈️
The 'international' airport is domestic only
Despite its name, Can Tho International (VCA) has no international routes, only domestic flights to cities like Hanoi, Da Nang, and Phu Quoc. Most visitors coming from Ho Chi Minh City arrive by road instead, about 2.5 to 4 hours depending on traffic and transport.
🛶
See the floating market at sunrise
Cai Rang gets going before dawn and starts thinning out by mid-morning, so an early start matters. Monday through Wednesday tends to be quieter than weekends.
🍊
Canal and orchard tours pair well with the market
Smaller boats can duck into narrow canals lined with fruit orchards and stilt houses, a common add-on to a floating market trip and a quieter look at delta life.
🌊
Flooding is a real risk during the monsoon
Heavy rain, especially in September, can flood low-lying streets and canals in the delta. Keep plans flexible if traveling June through September.
Top attractions
1
Cai Rang Floating Market
The largest floating market in the Mekong Delta, where boats sell fruit and vegetables at dawn, each hanging a sample from a tall pole so buyers can spot what they are selling from a distance.
2
Ninh Kieu Wharf
A riverside promenade on the Hau River with a curved, LED-lit pedestrian bridge, popular for an evening stroll or a dinner cruise.
3
Binh Thuy Ancient House
A well-preserved French colonial villa from the early 20th century, blending European and Vietnamese architectural styles, still owned by the same family.
