Seasons at a glance
🌟
Peak season: Jan, Nov, Dec
Bangkok's most comfortable stretch: the northeast monsoon has swept the humidity and rain away, mornings are relatively mild for a tropical city, and the sky stays mostly clear. It's also the busiest and priciest time to visit, with hotel rates climbing toward their yearly high and the Grand Palace and river-temple circuit drawing the thickest crowds of the year. November's Loy Krathong festival lights up the Chao Phraya with floating lanterns and riverside events, so book a river-view hotel well ahead if that's the draw. January pairs the best weather of the year with the worst air quality, so those postcard-blue-sky days often come with a persistent haze sitting over the skyline.
🌤️
Shoulder season: Feb, Mar, Apr, Jun, Jul, Oct
This tier spans two very different stretches. February through April is still officially dry season, real rain stays rare, but haze from traffic, industry, and regional crop burning lingers through February and March, and by April the heat itself becomes the main challenge, it's the hottest month of the year. June, July, and October sit on the wetter side of the monsoon: rain arrives most days, but typically as a heavy, focused afternoon downpour rather than an all-day washout, and October in particular starts to loosen its grip as the heaviest weeks pass. Crowds and hotel prices ease noticeably across all of these months compared to the November-to-January peak.
Off-peak season: May, Aug, Sep
The stickiest stretch of Bangkok's year. May opens the monsoon with intense heat still lingering alongside the season's first heavy rains, and August and September, the two wettest months, bring rain on most days along with the city's highest humidity. Flash flooding is a real possibility during the heaviest afternoon downpours, especially around low-lying streets near the river, though it typically drains within a couple of hours. The upside is the lowest hotel prices and thinnest crowds around the temple circuit all year.
Good to know
😷
Haze season, December to March
Stagnant winter air traps traffic and industrial pollution over the city. January and February are typically the worst months for air quality, even though they are also the driest, sunniest months on paper.
✈️
Suvarnabhumi is the main gateway
Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is Thailand's busiest airport and the country's primary hub for long-haul international carriers. Don Mueang (DMK), Bangkok's older airport, mostly handles budget and regional airlines, so check which one your flight actually uses before booking a hotel or transfer.
🌊
Streets can flood fast in the rainy season
Heavy afternoon downpours, especially August through October, can waterlog low-lying streets within minutes. Drainage usually clears it within a couple of hours, but it is worth building slack into any tight schedule.
🏙️
The city holds onto its heat
Dense concrete and heavy traffic trap warmth, so Bangkok often feels hotter and more humid than the same temperature would in the countryside, and nights rarely cool down much even in the driest months.
Top attractions
1
The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew
The former royal residence and Thailand's most sacred site, home to the Emerald Buddha. A strict dress code applies, shoulders and knees covered, and it's usually paired with the two temples across the river.
2
Wat Pho
Home to the 46-meter Reclining Buddha and considered the birthplace of traditional Thai massage, still one of the best places in the city to get one.
3
Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn
A porcelain-covered spire rising from the west bank of the Chao Phraya, best photographed from the river or a rooftop bar across the water at sunset.
